Canggu is popular for its rural surroundings and is generally a tranquil area where travellers can escape the pressures of modern living, but still be close enough to enjoy shopping and dining out in neighbouring Seminyak and Kerobokan. It is a quaint coastal area located 15-20 minutes north of Seminyak and just Southeast of Tanah Lot. The sand in Canggu is dark and volcanic, the beaches are mostly quiet and with rice fields that stretch right to the sand, you will discover a world that is yet to succumb to the overdevelopment of the rest of the south coast of Bali. There are some fantastic surfing spots around this region, including Pantai Berawa, Echo Beach and Batu Bolong.

Restaurants & Nightlife

There are many incredible restaurants located within the Canggu area. At Hotel Tugu there are several private dining areas that cater to those looking for an intimate and unique five star dining experience. Each of their signature restaurants offer guests the chance to experience Indonesian and Peranakan food at its best. However, if you are looking for a more casual dining experience, head straight for Echo Beach, where you will find The Beach House, Sticky Fingers and a selection of other beachside café’s. Echo Beach is the best place to hang out at breakfast time or grab a beer with friends at sundown. You will find a deliciously healthy and organic menu at Bali Buddha in the main street of Canggu. This area is also the perfect place to stop for a snack at a local warung, there are plenty dotted along the roadsides offering diners the opportunity to try a serve of everything from Suckling pig, to chicken satay.

There is no established nightlife in the Canggu area. Most people choose to take a 15-25 minute drive to either Seminyak or Kuta where the nights tend to head on well into the morning. However, if you like a quiet night, there is the occasional opportunity to catch an acoustic band or an interesting dj at one of the restaurants/bars near the beach – but they won’t go on much later than 12pm or 1am. This area is a great place to throw your own private party, just approach a villa or venue to check for venue prices.

Shopping

There are not many fashion stores located in this area but there are some. Clothing stores seem to be springing up all around the streets of Canggu; the problem is that none of them are located next door to the other. New boutique fashion stores are opening each and every week. If you have time you’re best to drive aimlessly around, you never know what you might stumble across. There are also plenty of local shops that sell handicrafts like baskets, teak and rattan furniture, wooden carvings and ceramics.

Tourist Attraction & Activities

The beaches are one of the biggest drawcards to this area because they are generally peaceful and offer the chance for visitors to see a stunning, and quiet, view of the Bali sunset. Traditional Balinese village life is also on show for visitors to observe as the daily rhythms of Canggu unfold. Peaceful Scenery: Many people like to drive around the Canggu area just to observe the quietly undulating terrain that is filled with cornfields and the rice paddies that people tend to associate mostly with central Bali. Incredible surfing opportunities hide throughout this area and those with a taste for the waves may also like to go to the beach at the end of Batu Bolong Road for a spot of wind surfing. The Beach House lies at the end of the quiet and bumpy road that leads to Echo Beach. The famous breakfast hideout that proves that in Canggu, you might find just about anything at the end of a long and winding road.

Surfing is a huge part of Canggu life. The waves in the area are perfect for moderate to advanced skill and if you are chasing the best waves you should head to most of advance surfer like to both Berawa and Echo beach. Wind /Kite Surfing is incredible at Batu Bolong, which is otherwise known as Canggu Beach. Here, you will find many professionals testing their skills and pushing their adrenaline levels to the edge. You won’t be able to hire equipment around the area – so make sure you bring your own.

The Canggu club is Bali’s answer to an exclusive country club. It’s the biggest sport club located in the area and has facilities that include a world-class swimming pool, gym, squash and tennis courts, soccer and rugby fields, basketball courts and so much more. There are short-term memberships available, and many villas in the area also hold membership on behalf of their guests. Well worth taking older children down to burn off some energy and meet some friends whilst you laze around enjoying a beer of glass of wine in the lounge.

Golf - If you fancy playing golf, you simply must head to the lush 18-hole Nirwana Bali Golf Club. Designed by Greg Norman, Nirwana possesses an intricate network of lovely streams, serene ponds and rice terraces to make for a challenging round. Nirwana is considered one of the best courses in South East Asia, so, so long as it doesn’t rain, you shouldn’t be disappointed.
